Road traffic regulations for e-bikes in Germany

As a European manufacturer of e-bikes, JOBOBIKE has received many questions from our customers during this time as to whether they need an insurance license plate for their e-bikes in Germany. The good news is that this is not the case for our e-bikes. Our e-bikes have a maximum supported speed of 25km/h and require pedaling to ride. This means that you do not need any proof of insurance to drive legally on German roads.

Let's take a look at the German road traffic regulations for e-bikes:

• Maximum speed: According to German regulations, e-bikes that do not exceed a maximum supported speed of 25km/h are classified as "Pedelecs" (Pedal Electric Cycle). These Pedelecs are legally considered bicycles and are subject to the same traffic regulations as conventional bicycles.
• Pedal assistance: To be considered a Pedelec, the pedal assistance must be switched off automatically at a speed of 25km/h or earlier. This means that the driver has to actively pedal to receive pedal assistance. It is important to note that the use of a throttle control or similar system may result in a different type of vehicle that does not benefit from the above regulations.

• Age restrictions: There are no specific age restrictions for driving a Pedelec. Anyone who is old enough to ride a bicycle can also ride a Pedelec. However, it is important to check local regulations as there may be specific age restrictions for driving in certain areas.

• Light and bell requirements: Pedelecs must have the same lighting and bell as conventional bicycles. This means they should have a front light, a rear light and a working bell to meet safety standards.

Although our JOBOBIKE e-bikes do not require any special insurance license plates in Germany, we still recommend that our customers take out liability insurance in the event that damage is caused to third parties. This can provide additional security.
